Criminal Minds season 12 finale: Shemar Moore returning
Sources confirm that Moore will be back for the season 12 finale airing later this spring as Derek Morgan. This marks the first appearance by Moore since departing the show last season, but he said at the time of his exit that he was open to returning down the line. His return most likely will be tied into the season-long arc of Mr. Scratch, and it should help to give the show a ratings boost as we get to the end of the road for the time being.
Do we think that Criminal Minds will be renewed for a season 13 by the time the finale airs? Absolutely, but a little bit of a ratings bump doesn’t hurt.
Moore recently signed on to appear on the upcoming CBS S.W.A.T. pilot, so him turning up now is a nice little bit of network synergy that could also boost his profile ahead of the new series coming on the air. If that show is picked up, it may limit his time to make future appearances; yet, we do think he could squeeze another one or two in his schedule if the stars aligned properly, which is basically the same as what we’re getting now.
Let’s get this out of the way
While it’s amazing to get Shemar back, don’t take this as a sign that Thomas Gibson will be returning anytime soon. The way in which he and Moore left the show is night and day, and there are legal minefields that could keep Thomas from stepping foot on the set again. Even if Scratch is eventually defeated, we figure that the show will find some other way to write out Hotch that offers up a chance to have a happy life elsewhere. (Personally, we wouldn’t be opposed to him doing a separate scene — filmed away from the typical cast and crew — similar to what Community did when they brought back Chevy Chase for a final appearance. You give the fans closure while also respecting the show and the parties involved in it.)

Don’t care unless they bring Hotch back too, permanently. I never watched the show to see Morgan. I watched for Hotch. #NOHOTCHNOWATCH
