‘Let It Shine’ video: See Gary Barlow’s big opening number
Is the BBC going to have a big hit in “Let It Shine“? That’s something that is not entirely clear at the moment, but based on the new lyric video below, we at least know that the show is looking to do everything that they can in order to have a big production almost right away.
While we can’t quite tell anything at all about the show itself based on this preview, we do know this: Gary Barlow and company are going to have a good time here, a far better one than you’re going to see on many other super-serious shows that are out there. It makes sense that this is on the BBC, since it feels perhaps closer to “Strictly Come Dancing” than any other series that is out there. While you get the sense that it will be serious, there’s also an air of positive energy about it. We cannot imagine this show bringing out any dud acts so that the judges can make fun of them.
We’re not someone who admittedly knows much about Barlow, other than that we appreciate his suit game and thought he was a good judge on “The X Factor.” He’s the reason that we are excited about this show, especially since he seems game to have a little bit of fun in this Broadway-inspired number, one that lyrically pokes fun at singing-show tropes and even at one point acknowledges the astounding amount of competition shows of this kind that are on the air across the UK.
Hopefully, this show does end up drawing some big ratings on its way to becoming a hit. We need some new ideas within this genre, just as we need to see some other sort of path towards people becoming a star beyond just singing on a show and getting a record deal. This only seems to work these days if you’ve got Simon Cowell and the whole Syco empire at your side ready to work with you.
