Why ‘Bull’ needs a Moriarty (and why Cote de Pablo should be cast)
Through the majority of “Bull” season 1, it’s been established that Dr. Jason Bull is absolutely brilliant at what he does. He’s incredibly smart, very shrewd, and somehow this is a man who has yet to lose a case in the live-action portion of the show that we’ve seen so far on CBS.
Now that we’ve said that, we have to pose an interesting question: Are we in need of a bigger threat? You can easily see where we are going just in looking at the title for this article. There are some easy comparisons to be made between Bull and Sherlock Holmes — both operating independently in many ways of their profession, both rarely ever lose cases that they set out to complete, and they are experts at reasoning. The main difference is that with Bull, his reasoning is more tied to reading other people than it is a read of evidence and of deducing the path of a crime.
What “Bull” lacks for now is his own Moriarty, a character who is a terrifying threat, is an equally smart adversary, and is capable of defeating him in a way that almost no one else can.
There are several different ways to introduce such a character. Maybe this is a prosecutor who Bull squared off against in the past, or maybe it’s a new consultant who works on reading the jury and trial science much in the way that he does. They can have a past that is linked in the way that maybe they went to school together, or they can have a past that stems from time spent in various courtrooms. Given that we are so early into the series, it’s easy to justify why we haven’t heard of such a character — there’s been no reason to bring them up.
Now, let’s get to the Cote de Pablo side of things. Back when the show was casting Bull’s ex-wife, we know that there were many people hoping for it to be Michael Weatherly’s former “NCIS” co-star. Upon reflection, we’re glad it was Yara Martinez instead. She was great in the role, and we think that for any actor, the idea is that you want to try to do something a little bit different than anything that you did before. Playing another love-interest type character would be fun, but mixing things up is all the more exciting.
Therefore, to us there is something tremendously exciting to see Cote play a part of a notorious adversary of Bull’s, his Moriarty or Lex Luthor, if you will. Have her turn up in a couple of episodes at the end of the season, and have her be the one who potentially defeats Bull and makes him question everything. We know that she has her own things going on, but part of the fun about this sort of role is that you could find other ways in the future to bring her back. It would be a really fun way to circumvent “NCIS” to put these two actors in opposition to each other, and for Cote as an actress, what would be more fun than being perceived as a villain? This particular role would be exciting given that as a person working with the prosecution, she’d probably interpret what she is doing as right and 100% just.
Like this idea? Loathe it? Either way, we want to hear from you below! Meanwhile, head over here to read more about the next new episode of “Bull” coming up. (Photo: CBS.)

Loathe it!
Pretty much the last thing Bull needs is Cote de Pablo! She can have her own shows, great for her; but just because she was part of NCIS, doesn’t mean she has to be in every show that Michael Weatherly is gonna be in! That didn’t end well the first time around, why do it again?
Besides, why does Bull need to become another NCIS? NCIS is still there to fill its own place; Bull is its own show and it’s amazing as it is.

Don’t you think that an antagonist would change the meaning of the show too much now?
IMO Bull needs to build its own story and personality, clearly establish relationships and roles, and only then they can start thinking about an enemy/antagonist that follows JB through the episodes.
This antagonist should be someone we meet during the show and not someone from Bull’s past, as they did for example with Gibbs/Hernandez/Paloma-Alejandro. It needs to be someone we learn about
during a case, we ‘live’ and not just someone they tell us about when he/she shows up.

You’re kidding, aren’t you? Please, tell me you’re kidding.
Bull is MW’s show. He’s amazingly talented and he finally has the chance to be the protagonist on a show that respect his talent.
Bringing CdP on Bull would just get him back to that gag-tiva thing and mostly would give some some very disrespectful people the chance to live their sick dream aka mote.
Leave Michael alone and give him the chance to move on.
TBH, I didn’t like those a few NCIS ‘quotes’ they did on Bull. IMO in Bull there shouldn’t be any line/actor that remind NCIS for a long time.
Bull is perfect as it is and it has such good writers that are able to ‘use’ and highlight MW’s talent so well that I’m quite sure (fingers crossed) they’ll never be so suicidal to cast CdP for any role.
BTW, where’s CdP? You said “she has her own things going on”, what? Just curious :)

Cote was clearly blackballed by certain people, just as several others were. A casualty to certain very fragile and vengeful egos.

“Clearly” blackballed? Would love to see proof of that. Her first gig after NCIS was back on CBS, so if you’re saying CBS blackballed her, they did it wrong. If you’re implying that there’s someone at NCIS who is powerful enough to blackball Cote de Pablo from Bull — a show this person neither stars on nor owns — then I think you’re giving someone far more power than they have.

I guess they’re also powerful enough to blackball her from Syfy channel as well, which chose not to develop her pilot. Which is a shame, actually – Prototype looked interesting and I think it would have been great for her to play a totally different character than Ziva. It would have given her a chance to stretch herself and show her acting chops.

“clearly blackballed”? You mean someone is boycotting her? Why? Because
she’s such a famous and wanted actress that someone is so jelous of her
success and so they’re boycotting her? LOL
Don’t you think that the
very unprofessional way she left NCIS, her fast and loose when they
asked her to return ’cause they wanted to close with Ziva/tiva, her
‘spitting in the plate’ she’s eaten for year (the same plate that gave
her success, fame and money) and all of her failures after NCIS, are the
reasons behind the fact she had to take acting lessons and the fact it
seems no one wants to hire her?
BTW, why CdP’s fans don’t want her to move on and have her own career? Why they want her to be paired again with MW instead of building her own career based on her talent?
MW has his own very succefull show, why don’t you want the same thing for your idol? Sometimes it seems her fans don’t see CdP strong enough to be the protagonist of her own show… Weird!

I know, right? I was actually hoping Prototype would get picked up – it looked interesting. And her character was totally different than Ziva, which would have given her a chance to really spread her wings.

Cote phobia? No, dear. Just stating the truth and expressing our opinion as you do.
No need to be rude or insulting just because people have a different opinion.

No, No, No!
In fact a million times NO!
Leave the past in the past, there have already been too many cutesy shout outs to NCIS as it is.
Also just how many bones must the ‘tiva’ fans be thrown? They aren’t the b-all of viewers, despite their oh so vocal presence on social media.
Let Bull be Bull – the show is strong enough on its own.

YES! Bull is Bull and NCIS is NCIS… Forcing Tiva on us as canon was the worst thing the show did to “pacify” Cote and her fans. Which, obviously, didn’t work and really hurt the show – driving away a lot of Michael’s fans who would have kept watching after his departure. For the team, in whatever ensemble.

the show isn’t that strong, actually.

I think CBS might fight you on that one. :-) It’s CBS’ strongest and best-rated new show. It’s certainly not in need of a stunt-casting gimmick quite yet.

Explain again how it was just Ziva that you hate. It’s coming off like it’s quite the opposite to be having a tantrum about Cote on Bull.

Don’t understand either of those statements.
For clarification – I don’t want ANY NCIS alums to guest on Bull.

December 30, 2016 @ 6:42 pm
Agreed, Kate. There was a lot of talk after the episode Light My Fire that they should cast Robert Wagner as Bull’s dad, and I was against that too, just like I’d be against casting Jessica Steen, Sasha Alexander, or any of the other former NCIS regulars, at least for the first season or so.
I’d actually like to see Bull move away from the NCIS references and build its own identity. Too many people read too much into the references.
FLCheesehead
December 28, 2016 @ 3:36 pm
Oh please god no. Bull is Michael’s show. Can’t people just let it be Michael’s show? I get that all the Tiva fans are frustrated by not getting their ideal happy ending of sex, love and marriage, but putting Cote on Bull would not recreate the magic that was Tiva on NCIS. The part that made Tiva work was the background — those years of them working together and growing together. Plopping her down into Bull with a made-to-fit backstory is a desperation move for a show that needs a stunt-casting gimmick. Bull does not. You’d be taking two characters with no common history and expecting them to make “magical synchronicity” all over again. That just doesn’t happen. They would become a caricature of Tiva, and it would be laughable.
Not to mention … Bull is a one-man band with a carefully curated inner circle. The character was developed and written that way. Michael doesn’t NEED an “evil twin” or a “nemesis”. And forcing one in just so Michael & Cote can be together again does neither actor any favors.

This sounds like Cote phobia. Get well soon.
FLCheesehead
December 29, 2016 @ 2:33 pm
Nope. No phobia here. I would love for Cote to find a new project — TV, film or Broadway — that showcases her “triple threat” talents, as opposed to having her show up on Bull. There are at least a dozen current network & cable shows she could join and bring a real spark to their casts. But the only one people want her on is Bull. Why? Because then the Tiva people get their Tiva back. Except they don’t. Because Tiva left the building when Tony did.
Not wanting Cote to follow behind Michael and end up on his show instead of her own isn’t a phobia. It’s wanting Cote to have a life away from Tiva too.

I like this idea. We all know this would lead to Passion and a happy ending us Tiva fans will never get. Even if its a different show but it will never happen, I don’t get the impression Weatherly liked sharing the spotlight with Cote even though he knows how to get the twitter followers to think he did. He seems to use her name for attention when he needs it.
marynela
December 28, 2016 @ 6:06 pm
I partly agree… I think casting Cote in “Bull” (for more than a guest appearance) would do neither the show nor the actors any good… I also do get the impression that Michael is kind of using Cote on social media to attract attention (for her?!)… On the other hand, I think he shouldn’t share the spotlight again with her, because – to be honest – he always had to stand in her shadow. It’s time for him to shine now… And for her in whatever she does next.
(As I’m not a Tiva fan, i.e. Tiva as lovers, I don’t get that Tiva fans aren’t happy in some way. Tiva is canon now, which I think was the worst direction their storyline could take. Their friendship and the “Will they? Won’t they?” to a certain extent was fun, but it was a relationship that would have never worked and hurt the team.)

I have to admit that I’m confused as to how Michael is “using Cote on social media to attract attention”. Tiva fans are, but I don’t see how he is. Then again … I pretty much hang out on IG and Twitter, so who knows what’s going on over at FB! LOL

I love it! Bull is a monolith. The show needs a real adversary, totally agree. I’d be over the moon to see Cote cast as the villain.

I really like the idea of Cote as Michael’s “evil twin.” They could both get their chomps into those roles with gusto. Plus it could allow the development of that magical synchronicity all over again. Best of all worlds.
