‘The Walking Dead’ season 7, episode 8 ratings: Improvement for midseason finale

The ratings for “The Walking Dead” season 7 started out with one of the highest of highs, as there was some incredible curiosity out there regarding who was going to die at the hands of Negan. Then, everyone learned that it was Glenn and Abraham, and suddenly the desire for many people to watch slowly started to evaporate into thin air. The ratings came out for the remainder of the episodes, and they were down sharply, giving the series its lowest live+same-day numbers in years.

Now, we’ve got good news and bad news on the subject of Sunday’s midseason finale. Here’s what is positive: The episode drew a 5.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic, which is the show’s highest rating since November 20. The same can go for the 10.6 million viewers it managed to accumulate. Yet, these are still big drops from the 8.4 rating and the 17 million viewers who watched the premiere, and it is the lowest rating for a midseason finale since the show moved into the format of airing eight episodes in the fall and eight more in the spring.

Pick your hand off of the panic button now, since this is hardly a sign that the show is going to be in any sort of immediate danger at all. This is still the #1 scripted show on TV, AMC is committed to it for another year, and we imagine that it will last for as long as the people involved want to keep making it. We do think that the show will reach a conclusion far earlier than the twenty or so seasons that people joke about, but there’s probably still several more years that it could continue to go before it starts to get to the point where it’s no longer relevant or exciting like it once was.

The seventh season will return in February, so we’ll see what the ratings end up being at around that time.
