Golden Globes 2017: Peter Dinklage, ‘Outlander,’ Sam Heughan, ‘Silicon Valley,’ Anthony Hopkins among snubs
While there were many TV shows and actors who ended up leaving the Golden Globe nominations on Monday morning feeling pretty overjoyed, there were obviously at the same time some others that were wrestling with a little bit of disappoint. There are always snubs, and while we do think this show gets it right more than the Emmys or the SAG Awards, there are also a very small number of spots open for nominations to begin with in comparison to the other shows.
This is where we probably should mention yet again that it’s ridiculous for the HFPA to make supporting actors in comedies and dramas compete against each other. The same goes for throwing limited series / TV movies in there since that just complicates things further.
Below, you can see a list of the biggest snubs that we are personally the most bummed-out about. These are super-quick judgments, so odds are there are about forty or so we’re leaving out just because they’re not on the forefront of our mind.
Most of the “Game of Thrones” cast – Other than Lena Headey, no one else could break through in a crowded field. Where’s Peter Dinklage?
Anthony Hopkins – He may be an acting icon, but the “Westworld” cast with nominations at the moment are all women.
“Outlander” – We’re thrilled for Caitriona Balfe; however, both the series and star Sam Heughan found themselves sadly snubbed this year when they both were deserving of a nod.
“Orange is the New Black” – Remember when it was generating a ton of nominations? This year, it was completely shut out.
“House of Cards” – You can say the same thing here.
“Silicon Valley” – One day after winning Comedy Series at the Critics’ Choice Awards, it’s left out in the cold here.
Jonathan Banks – We enjoy him just as much as we do Bob Odenkirk, so it would’ve been nice to see him recognized as supporting here.
“The Americans” – It got some acting nominations, but missed out on the series prize.
“Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” – Where was anyone on the show — or the show itself? Odd to see it completely gone.
Freddie Highmore – How is it that “Bates Motel” continues to get ignored, despite its star routinely generating one of the best performances of the year? He really embodies Norman Bates in a fairly terrifying way.
