‘The X Factor’ UK spoilers: What Sam Lavery, Honey G, 5 After Midnight will perform this week

Samantha -

This weekend, the remaining contestants on “The X Factor” are going to be taking on a theme with a certain degree of history to it: Boybands vs. Girlbands. We don’t mind this theme nearly as much as some others that we’ve seen on the show over the years, mostly because there is at least a pretty strong library of songs in here for the remaining contestants to choose from. You’ve got some interesting hits from the past few years, some from decades ago, and it’s a little more diverse than you would at first think.

As for some of the particular choices? Well … that’s where we start to differ.

Matt Terry: Wham! – I’m Your Man – Really? Why do this song? Matt’s so cool, and the first thing we think about here is “hokey.”

Ryan Lawrie – The Beatles – Twist & Shout – One of the band’s most-popular songs in their early touring sets. We just don’t know what in the world you can do with it on this show.

Emily Middlemas: One Direction – What Makes You Beautiful – After how Reggie ‘N Bollie completely turned this song on its head last year, we will not be cynical about the choice in the slightest.

Sam Lavery: Girls Aloud – I’ll Stand By You – Isn’t this technically a sound by The Pretenders, who were a little more of a traditional band? Well, it’s a good song so we’ll allow it.

Honey G: Kris Kross – Jump – It’s about as good as you’re going to get from her.

Saara Aalto: Girls Aloud – Sound of The Underground – Given the choices of Saara the past two weeks, we’re not entirely sure where this one fits in just yet.

5 After Midnight: Spice Girls – Say You’ll Be There – Honestly, we’re not that familiar with the song, but after listening to it once or twice, we do see how they could do a really cool rendition.

Four of Diamonds: Wilson Phillips – Hold On – Like with Matt Terry, this song feels a little dated and hokey. We’re not sure how, especially with Louis Walsh as a mentor, they are looking to update this.
