‘The X Factor’ UK: Gifty Louise trusted Simon Cowell with Fifth Harmony song choice
We’re now at the stage of “The X Factor” week where we’re looking back at what exactly went wrong the previous week, and today, we’re doing so through the lens of one Gifty Louise. We’ll have more of our personal thoughts on her exit later this week when we do our full postmortem article; today, we’ve got quite a bit to discuss just in terms of her own comments alone.
Speaking per Digital Spy, the singer had the following to say about her song choice this weekend of Fifth Harmon’s “In Love with a Monster,” which many people have labeled as a reason for her going home:
“The song wasn’t what I would have personally done … Another Fifth Harmony song? No, I wouldn’t have done that. It’s really cliché, [like] ‘Do you like all the Syco artists?’ It was gimmicky.
“Simon thought that was the right song for me and I just went with him. I didn’t think Simon had any bad mindset towards me, I didn’t think he’d want to sabotage me so I went with him … [After the performance] I told Simon I was going home tomorrow and he said, ‘Don’t worry babe you’ll be fine’.”
Now, do we think that the song played a role in what happened? Definitely, but its overall role is probably overblown here somewhat. Gifty also didn’t do enough clearly to connect with viewers on her personality, and had the misfortune of going first on the night, which is a spot that dooms many a singer on this show. She actually performed the song very well, and that to us matters more than what the particular song is. This was Fright Night week, and from that vantage point “In Love with a Monster” was actually a better choice than almost any other song that was out there on the night.
