Emmys 2016: Can ‘American Ninja Warrior,’ ‘Top Chef’ topple ‘The Amazing Race’?
We’ve made it no secret over the years that we hate the way that the Emmys handled the Reality Competition Show category. Specifically, there are times in which it feels like they don’t even bother to watch many of the shows that are nominated.
We really hope that this is the year that voters turn things around, though we do admit that this is a tricky category this year. Many of the nominated shows had off years, and for whatever reason voters decided that they would rather honor “The Voice” for a ho-hum year over “American Idol,” who went out on a reasonably high note with their final season.
The nominees
The Amazing Race (CBS)
American Ninja Warrior (NBC)
Dancing with the Stars (ABC)
Project Runway (Lifetime)
Top Chef (Bravo)
The Voice (NBC)
Analyzing the field – Given that “The Amazing Race” dominates this category so often, it’s really hard to assess many of the other nominees individually. We do think of the group that “Project Runway” probably has the weakest odds, just because it has not necessarily received a whole lot of buzz as of late.
Who should win – Of this group, we’re tempted to say “Ninja Warrior” mostly because it is the one show worth mentioning here that is not frequently nominated. Seeing a relatively-new series, at least compared to some of the others, win would be both exciting and fun. Plus, we think it has legitimately improved over the years when it comes to presenting the contestants and turning them into their own version of stars.
Who will win – Of this group, we’re inclined to say that “The Amazing Race” will again just because it almost always does. Still, it’s probably smart to not rule out “Top Chef,” a show that has taken this award home before and is more than capable of doing so again if voters give it a fair shake.
Which show do you think will take it home in this category? Vote in the poll below.
