‘Supergirl’ season 2, ‘The Flash’ not getting another DC hero companion — for now
At this particular point in time, The CW is being completely dominated by DC comics. Four of their fall series are superhero series based on familiar properties. If you want to throw in “iZombie” (which is a midseason show, and one seemingly set in a different universe), you’ve got give. Executive producer Greg Berlanti’s reach also extends beyond just superheroes with the comic adaptation “Riverdale” coming at some point in the new year.
So when you consider all of this, it makes some sense that for the time being, the network is not really looking at adding another superhero property to make this a five-nights-a-week sort of thing. Programming head Mark Pedowitz made this fairly clear while at the TCA Summer Press Tour today, commenting that originally there wasn’t even a plan to take on a fourth before the opportunity to snag “Supergirl” came up. (For the record, Pedowitz does not expect the show to match its CBS ratings on his network, but hopes that it could be the second or third-most-popular series on The CW following “The Flash” and maybe “Arrow.”)
We suppose natural curiosity is one of the reasons that a fifth superhero series could be added, but there were also rumors at one point that maybe the network would consider a supernatural-themed block on Fridays (no, not the kind with Sam and Dean) and could bring a show like “Constantine” into the fold. Yet again, the talk of John and his trench coat coming to The CW is thwarted.
Pedowitz did leave it open for something to come down the road, and it’s also possible that a character from an upcoming CW Seed show like “Freedom Fighters: The Ray” could turn up on a live-action show similar to Megalyn EK with “Arrow” this past season.
