‘Game of Thrones’ season 6, episode 9 preview: ‘Battle of the Bastards’ director on scale

Game of Thrones -

This weekend is going to give us in “Battle of the Bastards” one of the most intense episodes on “Game of Thrones” to date; as a matter of fact, the more we hear about it, the more excited we are. According to Entertainment Weekly, 500 extras and 600 crew members were needed to produce this sequence, which in turn took almost a month to film properly. This was directed by Miguel Sapochnik, who did a brilliant job on “Hardhome” last year and is going to have the task of also helming the final two episodes of the season.

In speaking about what made this particular episode so spectacular and different, the director said the following to the website:

“Every battle on Thrones is unique … I think that’s why [showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss] keep doing them. In the case of ‘Battle of the Bastards’ – or ‘BOB’ as we affectionately called it in production – David and Dan wanted to do a thing of spectacle, a strategic pitchfield battle they hadn’t had the resources to do back in season 1 or 2. I was particularly interested in depicting both the horror of war and the role of luck in battle.”

Obviously, we do think that luck does go a long way. For example, what happens if one group of soldiers manages to take Ramsay by surprise? Meanwhile, what happens if the Knights of the Vale arrive in the heat of the moment? There are so many variables that could end up altering the final course of this battle in a rather big way, and that’s something that we are going to have to see unfold.

Ultimately, rest assured that we will have even more news on this big battle as we get further into the weekend.
