‘Game of Thrones’ season 6: Nikolaj Coster-Waldau on Jaime, Brienne similarities

LogoThe sixth season of “Game of Thrones” has brought us a lot of wonderful stuff over the course of the past couple of months, and much of that has come via the reunion department. There’s something super-special, after all, that comes from getting to see some characters together in a way that you haven’t either for many years or ever.

In the case of this past episode of the show, we had Jaime and Brienne meet up for the first time in seasons as they negotiated a deal in Riverrun. She managed to get Edmure Tully’s army in hopes of defeating Ramsay Bolton, while Jaime and House Lannister effectively got the city. It was an interesting way to temporarily prevent bloodshed, but we do think that they are kicking the can somewhat since we can see the Lannisters and the Starks fighting down the road.

However, Jaime and Brienne are not leaders — they are noble soldiers doing their part for a specific cause. As Nikolaj Coster-Waldau told TVLine, the two really do have quite a few similarities:

“Everything they do, they’re following someone else’s agenda all the time — by choice. The whole thing of being honorable, being trustworthy when it comes to the people they love or the people they’ve promised to protect, they’re each other’s equal that way. Jaime will do anything for Cersei. He believes it’s his duty but it’s also his choice, if you will. Brienne is now Sansa’s… whatever you call that. Kingsuard? I know there’s a word for it.

“…In a weird way, someone else’s agenda or feelings always come before [Brienne and Jaime’s] own. I’m not even sure that they would ever allow themselves to go to that place. There’s no question you see that in this scene: There is more between them. But the way the scene ends, when she says, “If this goes back, I’m going to have to fight for Sansa Stark, and I’m going to have to fight you.” And he says, “Well I hope it doesn’t come to that.” There’s no question that if it comes to that, they’ll both do it. And obviously she’s going to kill him in an instant.”

Will they meet again? We hope so, and we also hope that if or when that happens, they’ll have a chance to be a little more friendly and cordial in the process. Be sure to stay tuned for some other updates!
