‘Mistresses’ season 4, episode 3 review: Joss looks for peace; Karen and Robert’s new status
“Mistresses” season 4 is starting to pick up steam now that we have Kate in the mix. Karen is sleeping with her manny, Joss and Harry are engaged, Kate has called off her marriage and is staying in town… and then there’s April. Her story is really the saddest to watch, because we haven’t liked how Marc has been treating her and her dreams, when she is being supportive of his and now that she’s packed away all of her painting gear, we wonder if that fun creative side of April is ever going to come out again or if her whole storyline is just going to be taking care of Marc and Lucy?
Well, April tonight did get a fun new storyline where she got a chance to try out some of her design skills for a new client, and it really did come at a perfect time given that Marc is currently off pursuing his new band dreams … something that we could see working out in theory, even if the odds of that are not exactly high in practice.
In getting now back to Karen for a minute, the great news is that she’s got a boyfriend! After the work relationship started to get a little messy, with him talking to her about parenting in the middle of making out, she eventually fired Robert and simply asked him instead for a relationship. While we’re not sure still this will end well, we’ve really come to enjoy this performance. Jerry O’Connell is perfect for the “Mistresses” world: He’s got the right energy, and he seems to have fun with most of these scenes.
The Kate storyline is still in many ways so new that it’s hard to know what to make of it, but we like how tonight she served a purpose beyond just herself in infuriating Joss, who showed both here and with her cyclist that she is having some serious rage issues in the wake of what happened to her last year. She has to still figure out how to properly channel that, whether it be in her new elaborate fitness routine or somewhere else. It’s going to be about balance for her, and with Harry so busy with Jonathan / questioning Jonathan’s motives, he may not be there to help as much as she’d like.
While we’d still argue that the April story is weak and Kate is still warming up, we’re enjoying “Mistresses” more now than we have all season. The challenge from here becomes keeping it up. Episode grade: B.
