Is ‘Law & Order: SVU’ season 17 new tonight? Where we could pick up
The past few weeks have certainly been intense when it comes to “Law & Order: SVU,” and it shouldn’t really be much of a surprise when you consider everything that we’ve gone through. After all, we saw in the finale the death of Dodds, and the toll that this is going to have on Olivia and every other member of the squad.
At the end of the episode, Oliver and Tucker contemplated going away, and Carisi opted to stay with the team for a while longer rather than continuing to pursue law … at least for now. Are we going to get some other updates? Unfortunately, no. While some past seasons have had 24 episodes, this one only had 23, and last week was in fact the finale. There may not be an official premiere date for the show yet, but we expect it to return to NBC this fall.
From a showrunning standpoint, Rick Eid is replacing Warren Leight, and while we imagine he will put his own personal touch on the product, we don’t really expect too much when it comes to substantial shifts to the story. It’ll still be about Benson, and we imagine that there are also going to be some extremely relevant cases that cast a light on society.
We’d also hope that there is some sort of a time jump, just to see how the team is further adapting to losing Dodds in the long-term, and to also continue to show character development for every member of the cast.

23 episodes this season was very nice. A 1.6 average episode rating was very nice too. Let’s hope the new show runner can keep up the good work. Will SVU shoot 2 or 3 new episodes before summer break? Hopefully we’ll find out.
