NBC’s ‘The Voice’ spoilers: What Daniel Passino, Mary Sarah, Bryan Bautista will perform
Uninspired. If there is one word we can think of for the top 11 song choices for “The Voice” Monday night, that’s it. We don’t know if the show is giving them a limited songbook or the coaches are getting lazy; either way, we don’t understand the appeal of picking so many songs that really should be cast into fire and never performed on any singing show again.
We’re not saying this from the standpoint of comparison one artist to another; it’s more about extracting meaning from a song. For example, hearing someone sing “Against All Odds” by Phil Collins for the thousandth time extracts all meaning from the song that was once there … and some probably found it hokey to begin with.
These song choices were first reported by Mjsbigblog.
Alisan Porter – Team Christina – Stay With Me Baby by Lorraine Ellison. Great choice. It’s consistent with her brand so far, but also enough of a diversion to be exciting.
Nick Hagelin – Team Christina – Your Body is a Wonderland by John Mayer. This is a song that can come across easily as corny. Singer discretion is advised here.
Bryan Bautista – Team Christina – Just the Way You Are by Bruno Mars. We’re not sure that a rendition of this song will top iTunes, but it’s a solid choice for a guy who can pull some of the emotion out of the lyrics.
Adam Wakefield – Team Blake – Lights by Journey. Love the song. Also, love the creativity from Adam and Blake to not just do country every week.
Mary Sarah – Team Blake – Johnny and June by Heidi Newfield. In Mary’s case, we still think this isn’t a song that you were expecting from her.
Paxton Ingram – Team Blake – Break Every Chain by Tasha Cobbs. Wait, we’re doing gospel now? We know appealing religious viewers is something that the coaches have done many times before, but our struggle with Paxton is that we have no clue what sort of artist he wants to be. This doesn’t help.
Laith Al-Saadi – Team Adam – Make it Rain by Ed Sheeran. Is this Adam Levine’s favorite song or something? For a track known mostly for one episode of “Sons of Anarchy,” it’s amazing how much play it has on singing shows.
Shalyah Fearing – Team Adam – The Climb by Miley Cyrus. Sigh. We love Shalyah; however, we don’t know why she’s continually getting songs that have already been done to death on singing shows.
Owen Danoff – Team Adam – Fire and Rain by James Taylor. Finally, one of Adam’s artists has a cool song choice. Unfortunately, it’s the one that almost went home with a cool one last week.
Hannah Huston – Team Pharrell – I Can’t Make You Love Me by Bonnie Raitt. Everything we’ve said above about a lack of creativity can be said here. Yet, we can at least picture Hannah doing a great version of this song.
Daniel Passino – Team Pharrell – Time after Time by Cyndi Lauper. It may be a little overplayed, but this is probably a smart move by Pharrell to go with a (pun intended) timeless song for Daniel. It’s one that for some reason, we never get tired of.
