‘Luther’ star Idris Elba teaming with ‘American Crime’ creator for new series
While we still don’t know if there will ever be another series of “Luther,” the good news that we have today is that Idris Elba will be appearing on TV in the near future regardless.
Per Deadline, Sky Atlantic and Showtime are going to bring to you “Guerrilla,” a six-part limited series set in the backdrop of the British Black Power movement of the 1970’s. Elba will both star and executive-produce alongside “American Crime” creator / incredibly busy man John Ridley, who has written a good many of the episodes already. It’s a powerful show that could potentially merit both Elba and Murphy more awards attention, something they should be rather familiar with at this point.
In a statement regarding the collaboration, Showtime head David Nevins had the following to say:
“We’re excited to partner with our friends at Sky to bring a fascinating and unexplored story spearheaded by John and Idris, two major creative talents at the top of their game … Guerrilla will surely keep our audience at their edge of their seats.”
This is not the first time that Showtime has teamed with Sky, as the two both work collaboratively on “Penny Dreadful.” There are benefits on both side to doing this, and it’s certainly something we’re seeing more and more of these days with several shows. Another good example of this is “The Night Manager,” which AMC at least had a hand in (though it originally aired on the BBC in the UK).
We’ll have some more news on Elba and some other productions coming to Showtime soon.
