‘Once Upon a Time’ season 5, episode 18 review: The story of Red and Dorothy
Isn’t this what happens when we all assume? For much of “Once Upon a Time” season 5, our key assumption has been that the show’s first same-sex couple was going to be Mulan and Ruby, if for no other reason than that Mulan was the only LGBTQ character we’d seen on the show so far, and the woman otherwise known as Red seemed to be the only real option.
Well, Sunday night’s “Ruby Slippers” found a way to surprise us by making us ‘shippers of Ruby and Dorothy for the first time, who turned out to be very interested in each other! Granted, there were some hurdles that the two had to overcome, but as a way to bring Dorothy back to life, she needed true love’s kiss. While this story did come out of nowhere, we appreciated that it was a small but fun love story in the same vein as many others on the show. It was nice, sweet, and while we don’t know how much more of them we are going to see, we’re pretty happy that we saw it tonight.
As for the remainder of the hour, it felt like the rest of the story dealt with writing off actors who are pregnant in real life for the immediate future. When it comes to Mary Margaret, David found a way to send her back to Storybrooke so that she could look after their child. Meanwhile, Belle decided to put herself to sleep so that Rumpelstiltskin could cancel out the contract, and then she could be woken up and the baby would not belong to Hades.
Our heroes are not out of the woods just yet, mostly because of the fact that Hades and Zelena are not done just yet, and we still have to get the rest of the group out of the Underworld. Time will tell there. Grade: B+.

was also shocked and disappointed with this episode… didn’t expect OUAT would take that direction and seem to promote something that is contrary to what is right.
i hope the writers and producers would read these comments and find a way to bring the show back to the right track…but i doubt, the damage has already been done…and knowing the show, once they start a “true love” story of the characters, it will last until the end, and they had already took that path for ruby & dorothy… how will they take that back without distorting the show’s belief in true love that lasts…? i’m just sad for this episode.

So disappointed that my faith and morals have to be trampled on in a show that is supposed to be about fairytale characters. Snow White would never encourage that. There is a reason she is pure as snow. Shaking my head.

its very disturbing that a fairy tale cant stay innocent and pure. Finally found a show, modern day fairy tale, but I cant even let my child watch it now after this because of the confusion. Everyone doesnt need homosexuality stuffed in their faces. Please get it together. Very sickening. Theres no way in the world, Little RED RIDING HOOD IS KISSING ANOTHER WOMAN. LET ALONE DOROTHY FROM THE W.O.Z. This is so out of order.

I so agree Angie!! This was one of my favorite shows and now I have to stop watching. Heroes don’t do this. So dissapointed that OUAT lowered their talented story writing skills to look like every other trashy show on tv these days. These is not the fairy tales I know. And not kid friendly. Wish the show would have had the guts to stand out and be different. I guess to fitting they are in the underworld because this episode killed it for me. So so so upset at this and disappointed.
