Ratings: ‘The Catch’ fails to catch on; ‘Grey’s Anatomy’; ‘American Idol’ steady
With networks saving up most of their programming arsenal until next week, there really was not that much to report on in terms of Thursday night’s ratings … though we do at least have a few highlights and lowlights that are worthy of discussion.
The good news – Hey, “American Idol” (1.7) and “Shades of Blue” (1.0) were both fairly steady in the 18-49 demographic. Isn’t that something to at least partially celebrate? Both shows are at least doing a decent enough job at staying relevant, and we imagine that the former is especially going to get some attention as we get closer to the end of the season. “Scandal” (1.6) was also reasonably steady week-to-week.
The bad news – It was not a good start for “The Catch” on ABC, despite having one of the cooler logos out of any show premiering this fall. Critics for the most part ravaged the show, so the logo may be the best thing about it. It premiered to a 1.2 rating in the demo, worse than any recent episode of “How to Get Away with Murder,” and there’s a good chance at least 10% of these viewers will bail after the premiere. That is typically the bare minimum of what we expect.
On order for this caper drama from Shondaland to stay alive until the fall, it is going to have to figure out a way to either keep the majority of the viewers that it has or find some new ones, and that’s going to be a tough thing to do in the short amount of time that it has.
