ABC’s ‘Scandal’ season 5: Gregg Henry on return, Hollis Doyle – Donald Trump comparisons
As if the Presidential election on “Scandal” was not crazy enough with both Susan Ross and Mellie Grant in the race, the ABC series certainly found itself a rather interesting way to step up its game on Thursday night’s new episode, bringing into the equation an extremely rich man in Hollis Doyle who is opinionated, offensive, and also with an ego that is out of this world. While we have seen this character before on the show, it is very clear at the moment that he is meant to be the show’s version of Donald Trump.
So in what ways, besides the money, are Trump and Doyle similar? This is something that the man behind the role in Gregg Henry detailed further in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter after this past episode came on the air:
“The biggest similarity is the way he talks about immigrants and people coming across the border. In this episode he says, ‘If you’re some pesky little border-crosser, you won’t be welcome.’ His feelings on immigration are in line with Trump’s. Hollis is an oil man, though Trump is a big businessman, so Trump’s tax breaks to the wealthiest people is what Hollis will be for, too, I’m sure.”
Doyle could be in theory in the race for a long time, mostly since he is playing up on the insecurities and frustrations of many Americans in some of his speeches and his work so far. The show is probably going to have a field day with this role, and knowing that he is back now does give us some other information as to why the writers have had to re-write some dialogue this season after it appeared in some of the debates.
