ABC’s ‘Castle’ season 8 spoilers: Will there be a cliffhanger?
At the moment, the renewal status of “Castle” is firmly up in the air. While ABC did decide recently to renew a whole slew of shows, they kept the future of the Stana Katic – Nathan Fillion series under wraps. Why? Part of that may be because of the show’s ratings, while another part of it may have to do more with negotiations that will need to happen in order to lock in some of the cast. Anytime you have a show that is this far into its run, you have to expect some moving parts.
One thing that you should be aware of here is no matter what happens with season 9, there may at least be something with the upcoming finale that is open-ended. For more on that, take a look at what co-creator Alexi Hawley had to say in an interview with Entertainment Weekly:
“Our hope is to get to a place where they do get to confront LokSat and get something satisfying … It would be great to have something of a cliffhanger.”
Do we think that this is the right move for the show? We’d say that so long as it is not one of those cliffhanger endings where someone’s life hangs in the balance, we’re fine with it. We would just consider it a pretty incredible mistake to have an ending that completely distorts what the show is; therefore, so long as the writers think of a cliffhanger as more of what a season 9 could be, we’d be happy.
Also, let’s wrap up LokSat and keep season 9 about something new.

Episode 19 of this season Rick and Kate are still chasing LokSat around. Episode 16 Kate finally moves back in make sense of that. Why didn’t Kate move back in in episode 3, or why did she move out at all? If you are looking for a cliffhanger at the end of the season, lets go back to article Tv Line at on 11/21 ” did Rick and Kate make a baby” ?

Seems like Nathan signed his contract to return for one year in April 2015 and Stana waited until the last minute. I suspect that we may learn more in April when we will know if anyone has signed (or not signed) contracts. I have heard that both are looking into other projects and that might influence whether they sign new contracts or not and how early they might sign. Just have to wait and see but it is looking more and more like no new season 9 whether there is a cliff hanger or not.

These new show runner seem to be doing such a horrible job! I don’t think it’s the writers, as the shows themselves have been decent, but the insistence that Kate and Castle have to be essentially separated (at least in everyone’s eyes) is such a turn off for me. Perlmutter offering up his brother to Kate and she’s not ready to date yet? Give me a break!
I’m not a fan of cliffhangers. But, in the case of this year, I believe it will be a moot point anyway. The show runners have wounded the fan base enough to cripple the show’s ratings. They lost the PCA after winning five straight years. Stars win their position awards, so the fans love them, they just don’t love the direction of the show.
Stana and Nathan are looking at other projects all of the time, and the other stars in the cast are so good, that they won’t have long to wait for other roles. I don’t believe the show runners are killing this show on purpose, but they might as be! They continue to displease. I will be floored if it’s picked up for another year with the same people running it.
I’ll still hope that it is! I love this show!

In true Hawley fashion, he is going back on promises made in January. He promised to wrap up all ongoing S8 stories and no cliffhanger. Im convinced his main objective has been to drive fans away this year, not draw them back. In that sense, he has done a great job.

The fan base is angry at Castle – TPTB, the writers, the show runners, ABC. The fans are at the point of “I don’t care.” A cliffhanger at the end of this season will not draw fans back to the show. It will drive them away. Judging by the brilliant reading of the fans by the show runners this season, I expect there will be a cliff hanger. The worst of all worlds for Castle will happen. No one will care.

Jim, your comments are right on. It is unfortunate that TPTB never really care about what the fans want it is all about their money. For example take Longmire cancelled by network and since so many angry fans got it picked up by Netflix maybe the fans should petition Castle to go in that direction and get rid of major networks.

I am not for a cliffhanger. They say that season 9 is to be a return to single case, stand alone episodes that were the hallmark of the show for the first five seasons that generated the high number of viewers and great success. I would be extremely happy with just that specific kind of ending. I could then consider the end of the specific case, the end of the season and (possibly) the end of the series a success. Then I would return for season 9 for more of the same or simply say well done and good luck.

I think these writers are clueless ,now coming out saying there might be s cliffhanger .They have completely distorted the show too bad ,I think this is it for the series.

I wouldn’t say for sure this is it. It will depend on how they end it. I think the “sort of” cliffhanger won’t be about LokSat, I think they will end that storyline. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the cliffhanger have to do with something about what to look forward to for season 9 like Castle and Beckett wanting to start a family, for example. I would guess how well the season finale does will depend on whether we get a season 9

cdeahl, that could be a possibility, I guess all we can do is wait and see .Not sure what the new head of ABC is looking for.

agreed. just have to wait and see what happens. I would be more worried about Stana and Nathan resigning than ABC renewing it honestly.

True maybe they are both looking for a way shorter season ,maybe like the final of Bones.
