‘Game of Thrones’ season 6, George R.R. Martin material could have key difference
The upcoming season of “Game of Thrones” is likely to have many great twists and turns from the George R.R. Martin source material, but it just so turns out that there may still be one big reason for A Song of Ice and Fire fans to look forward to The Winds of Winter, even if it hits bookstores a good time after the season airs: There will be something in the books that the show could have a very hard time doing.
In trying to explain this twist as succinctly as possible in a new interview with IGN, Martin had the following message to pass along:
“The show can’t do this, unfortunately, because they’ve killed a character I have not killed.”
Does this mean that the show could just try to assign this twist to someone else? Sure, but it could ultimately be difficult since there may not be a direct parallel with some other characters. Sometimes, the show just has to abandon storylines that are big in the books in order to surface the things that it has at its own disposal. For example, just look at the Lady Stoneheart character; she was someone book fans were dying to see on the show, but producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss decided to go in a difference direction, and since there was not a character who could fully emulate this story, they just have not included it.
Ultimately, it could be some time before we can offer up some sort of one-for-one comparison between the show and the books, but season 6 will premiere on HBO this April. Stay tuned for more updates.
