‘Galavant’ season 2, episode 3 review: When wedding planners attack
Going into the third episode of “Galavant” on ABC, it was pretty clear to us that there were going to be high expectations. In between throwing stuff out of castle windows and Richard’s friend the unicorn, episode 2 may be one of our favorite episodes of the entire series.
Episode 3, at least for us, is a little more mixed. There were some stories that were particularly funny, including Gareth’s night terrors and Galavant / King Richard trying to persuade his former kingdom to help him do battle. There were also some pretty funny musical numbers all about some of these actions (Timothy Omundson singing!), and Richard may have finally found himself a love interest to boot. All of this was funny, light, and everything that we enjoy about the show.
The storyline for Isabella this time is what we’re a little more iffy about, mostly because this whole evil wedding-planner character seemed to come out of nowhere, and we didn’t find his musical number to be particularly funny. More than anything, it was a tad grating. We do understand that for the most part, it was a means to an end, with that end being brainwashing a down-in-the-dumps Isabella to be ready to marry her own cousin. Thanks to a special tiara, she’s now excited about it! Her parents are more interested in what the implications of said marriage could be to really bother with the fact that their daughter is not behaving like her old self at all. This is where her cliffhanger lies right now, with Jester (who is really coming into his own this season) serving as one of the only people to notice that something is up.
We are still waiting for that one big moment this season where all of the characters are reunited and we get a chance to see some of the fun / some of the musical numbers we’ve been hoping for from the whole group; yet, this episode did at least a good job of getting us closer to that. Grade: B.
