‘The X Factor’ rumors: Talking the latest ‘cancellation’ chatter
Basically, there is talk that there are bookies in Britain that have raised the odds highly that the next season of the ITV talent show will be its last … and that’s it. That’s the story. There’s no word on ITV that the show is ending or is even in danger of ending. It’s just that some odds-makers decided that there was a strong chance of it happening.
When you consider the evidence for a minute or two, we’ll admit that we at least understand some of where they are coming from here. The show’s numbers were down significantly versus the 2014 season, and with ITV recently acquiring “The Voice” UK to air as early as 2017, there may not be as much of a need for this show. While we don’t have a cost breakdown in front of us, we know that “The Voice” films its auditions at a centralized location, they have fewer live shows, and don’t trot contestants around the world for judges’ houses. From what we can tell, it’s probably a cheaper show to make. Its ratings are slightly lower, but not necessarily significantly so.
For now, though, we’re not willing to say that the wheels are coming off “The X Factor.” We figure the network will look at the ideas and proposed changes to the show next year, and then figure out precisely what they want.
