‘The X Factor’ UK winner Louisa Johnson’s single ‘Forever Young’ surprising disappointment
Remember all of those people proclaiming that Louisa Johnson was immediately going to be the biggest thing since sliced bread after “The X Factor” this season? Well, this latest bit of news just goes to show that no matter how much hype the press and the show may put into someone, people still have to go out any buy the records when the dust settles.
We don’t mean to be too cynical and snarky at the show here, since we legitimately are surprised about the news that Johnson’s “Forever Young” did not perform better than it did on the British sales charts. She’s got an amazing voice, and the song choice seemed perfect for her in the way that it was a complete mess for runners-up Reggie ‘n Bollie. In the days since the finale, the track has sold slightly less than 40,000 copies, which has it charting as the worst performance ever for a winners’ single. It also puts it in a position where it will be difficult for to capture the Christmas #1 spot, something that is highly cherished in the British music industry. Last year, Ben Haenow snagged it with “Something I Need.”
The biggest culprit in the poor sales for Louisa simply has to be the lower overall ratings for the show, which has declined steadily over the past few years. Even when you do factor that in proportionally, it still seems as though fewer people on average are buying the single than in years past. The only things that we can speak to there is that either people are not connecting enough to Louisa, or the song is too dated and something more current would have worked better for the teenage singer.
Regardless of the reason, this is something that we’re going to track further in the weeks ahead. Head over here to get more of the latest insight on the show.
