‘Chicago Med’ series preview: Where we pick up after ‘Chicago Fire’ crossover

Tuesday night is going to prove itself very quickly to be an important one for not just “Chicago Med,” but for the entire Dick Wolf franchise and for NBC. When you look at the network’s schedule as a whole, they could use a few more big hits. “Truth Be Told” and “The Player” both flopped, and really, the only bona fide hit that they have on the schedule is “Blindspot.”

Can “Chicago Med” reverse that? What it is bringing to the table right away is an established place in a popular universe. This is something that much of the cast previews in the video , as you also see some cameos for a few other familiar faces from “Chicago Fire.” This show is very much a part of that universe, and you are going to see frequent tie-ins to it over the course of the run of episodes coming up this fall.

Specifically, this video makes it clear that following the outbreak that we saw in the backdoor pilot last season, the premiere will feature the re-opening of the hospital, and some of the immediate challenges that come after the fact as patients start to run in. This will hopefully have accurate medical mysteries and complicated stories like every other show in the genre, but what we think will set it apart is that aforementioned place in the universe. There is already connective tissue here, so much more than any other medical show has at their disposal. They can go outside the hospital and work effectively.
