‘Chicago PD’ season 3 will not address ‘Chicago Fire’ – Casey cliffhanger early on
We were certainly curious to see just how NBC was going to try and resolve a certain “Chicago Fire” cliffhanger moving into the fall season, and for one simple reason: The schedule is a little bit all over the place. While “Chicago PD” is premiering at the end of September, the flagship series does not return until October 13. Therefore, how are you going to deal with what happened to Casey? “Chicago PD” exists in that same universe, and given that he was seemingly taken, it makes sense that this is something that people would be talking about if the Fire Department were to come around.
Well, it looks like the writers have figured out a solution: You’re just not going to see much of “Chicago Fire” on the police show through the first couple of episodes. Speaking to TVLine, executive producer Matt Olmstead refers to “PD” as being in somewhat of a “detached timeline,” and explains that they deliberately set out to make sure that “PD” did not do the work of “Fire” in closing off the Casey story:
“We were mindful to not have too many of the characters from Fire on P.D. because that’s a little weird if they’re at Molly’s having drinks. Then why aren’t they talking about where Casey is?”
It would obviously be ideal if the shows would just premiere at the same time, that way you don’t have too many of these storytelling difficulties. With that being said, “Chicago PD” is probably handling this right. If you are one of these people who only watches one show and not the other, it’d be awfully unfair for Casey’s cliffhanger to be addressed before the “Chicago Fire” premiere even airs.
