‘Agents of SHIELD’ season 3: Elizabeth Henstridge on Simmons’ surprising fate

Simmons -There are many places in which we imagined Simmons ending up at the end of Marvel’s “Agents of SHIELD” season 2. Being sucked up into some sort of alien goo is not one of them. It was a strange conclusion to an insane night of TV that featured Coulson losing a valuable appendage, Skye losing her mother at the hands of her father, and a variety of other general craziness that could have been spread out over five or six episodes of another show.

The most important thing to note here is that despite a not-so-pleasant fate at the end of this past episode, the Simmons character is not going to be going anywhere. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly in a new interview, Elizabeth Henstridge confirms that she will be back for a third season, and that there is something that will happen as a result of the events of the finale. She just can’t figure out what that something will be:

“Part of me was thinking, if this is some sort of Inhuman thing then maybe this is like the mist, and it’s some sort of gel, and maybe I’ll have superpowers, but I don’t think I will … I think I’m somewhere. I think it transports me somewhere. We’ve had so many theories on set. ‘Maybe she can go back in time and kill Ward,’ or ‘Maybe she goes back in time and for whatever reason Fitz doesn’t know who she is and no one knows who she is,’ or ‘Maybe she goes invisible and no one can see her,’  or ‘What if she’s just trapped inside the rock?’ That would be terrible. There have been so many theories, but I think it’s a transportation device.”

One of the fun things about this interview is mostly that Henstridge is willing to speculate at all. Many actors won’t do that, and simply go with more of a wait-and-see approach in case they actually end up getting it right. Our sentiment here, though, is that there are so many different possibilities for what could happen that it really does not matter.
