‘The Night Shift,’ ‘The Mysteries of Laura’ renewed by NBC
NBC waited until as late as humanly possible on Friday night to announce some of their renewals, but they may still catch some of you by surprise. After all, who thought that both “The Night Shift” and “The Mysteries of Laura” were coming back? We’re happy for both shows, but still shocked.
Let’s turn first to “The Mysteries of Laura,” which was apparently the subject of an interesting negotiation, According to Deadline, studio Warner Bros. TV worked on this one alongside the season 3 pickup for “Undateable,” which makes us almost wonder if the studio really pushed for the network to take both of them. The Debra Messing series was a weaker performer in the ratings, and we’re hearing now that it could be only 13 episodes and would undergo a creative shakeup to focus more on the police side of things.
The renewal for “The Night Shift” comes as the show fared okay after “The Voice” on Monday nights. The real reason for our surprise here is based mostly on the fact that there are now an array of medical dramas on NBC for the new season, with the biggest one being “Chicago Med,” which launched during an episode of “Chicago Fire” season 3.
With this latest news in mind, NBC may have now figured out the majority of its returning schedule, given that a variety of their other long-running series were picked up a little bit earlier in the day. Their upfront presentation is earlier in the week.
What do you think about all of this renewal news? Share right now with a comment.
