‘The Mindy Project’ canceled by Fox; could head to Hulu

While we’ve known for some time that the ratings for “The Mindy Project” were low, we still felt for whatever reason like Fox would keep it. It is a show that has such a young, social audience, and it also has critical acclaim to go along with it.

Well, what you should probably take away from the news of its cancellation tonight is rather simple: While networks want social interaction and streams, ratings still matter more than anything else. The Mindy Kaling series struggled when it comes to keeping the numbers, and at this point the network could not justify keeping it on the air. It has found some success with “Last Man on Earth,” and that may have helped to make this season at least somewhat expendable.

So is there another twist that could end up sparing the show still? It at least sounds like it, given that Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Hulu could be a potential suitor for the show moving forward, possibly with an order for multiple seasons. It already owns streaming rights to all episodes, and this could be a perfect suitor for the show’s brand of humor. Also, you have to know that with the series’ cult following, this is probably going to be one that, like “Community,” finds a new home. The internet is starting to feel more and more like a good venue for comedy than network TV, anyway; even shows like “The Big Bang Theory” are currently falling.

Ultimately, the thing that we would tell you if you are a major “Mindy Project” fan is to hold on to hope, since there is still a chance anything could happen.
