‘Shark Tank’ video: Can ZinePak stretch beyond the music world?
Friday night’s new episode of “Shark Tank” is just about here, and with the video below we are focusing primarily on a product that wants to cater to the diehard fans of many different forms of entertainment. The product is ZinePak, and we get the premise pretty easily. It is a way to get some more collectible items to go along with a CD you buy from your favorite artist. They’ve already worked with artists like Katy Perry, R5, and Florida Georgia Line, and they are in the tank apparently to try to expand to start creating these products for movies, video games, and other forms of entertainment.
Let’s talk here first about the valuation: They are extremely proud of this company! They would have to be in order to be thinking that it is worth anywhere near what they are asking for it, especially for only 10%. However, given the artists they’ve worked with, they probably have some sales to back it up.
The part of this business plan we would question is simple: Why move beyond music? There are still countless artists without these, and it feels to us like it would make more sense to do this rather than spreading yourself too thin. There are already special-edition movies out there in the form of collector DVDs, and video games have been doing this for a while, as well. This is a good business, but given their success so far we’re honestly not entirely sure that they even need the tank’s help.
Personally, we’re not sure if we would ever buy any of these, but we could imagine either some music collectors or young people springing for the extra cash. It’s just hard since the digital market will be a huge competitor for people who want to listen to music now.
