‘The Originals’ season 2, episode 18 reaction: Sebastian Roche opens up on Mikael shocker

Mikael -

The Originals” is a show where death is pretty common, though we suppose that all things considered there is a certain amount of irony in that. After all, this is also a show that also featured a wide array of immortal characters.

The funny thing about Mikael is that he is a man we thought was more or less killed off before, but at the same time, the patriarch of the entire Original family managed to find his way back yet again for this show after first appearing in “The Vampire Diaries.” While it is a bizarre trajectory, we were certainly glad to have him on board here … though we don’t really have him any longer. It seems like his death this time around may be more permanent, as we saw Klaus finally do away with the man while trying to prepare his plan to defeat Dahlia, the latest arrival and member of this family. This death comes only a week after we saw the end of Esther on the show at the hands of Freya.

If nothing else, at least it sounds like Sebastian Roche had some sort of idea that this death was in fact coming. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter in an interview posted after this past episode, Roche (who has also appeared recently on “Once Upon a Time”) took a moment to reflect on what was a pretty awesome run on the show:

“[The Originals producers] Michael Narducci and Matt Hastings called me in advance to tell me I was going to shuffle off my mortal coil, to quote Hamlet … I thought it was really classy of them, and was really emblematic of the relationship we’ve had over the years. It’s amazing — three or four years ago when I auditioned for the role of Mikael, I never would have thought I’d be lasting into the year 2015. It’s been a great run. He had such a prominent role in the family and in the series because of the nature of the character and the nature of the part being the patriarch of the Mikaelson family.”

We still have a particularly hard time believing that Roche will never appear on the show again. Why? Even if he doesn’t grace the series in the present, there is always the potential of a flashback.
