‘Game of Thrones’ season 5, episode 1 reaction: On Cersei’s prophecy from the past
This is where we are left now that Tywin is dead, and she and Jaime are still trying to piece together the leftovers of King’s Landing. Has it come true, or is there something more still to come? The important thing to remember here is that prophecy and reality, even in this world, are two very separate things. Co-showrunner David Benioff explains with the following quote per Entertainment Weekly:
“The interesting thing about prophecies is they don’t always come true … Melisandre thinks she sees things in the flames and sometimes she’s right and sometimes she’s not. One of the things we like about George’s books is it’s not as if everything always hones to where some enigmatic prophecy determines the fate of each character.”
Perhaps by the end of this season we are going to have a better opportunity to understand where Cersei’s future truly lies, and if there is any way she can ultimately change it. For the time being, we are reasonably confident that she can given the character traits she possesses. While we do not consider her remotely likable, she is a character who remain fascinated with and eager to see how she handles events moving forward.
