‘Shark Tank’ video: Budsies, Bee Thinking look to impress
We said it in our “Shark Tank” preview pitch earlier this week, and we have no problem repeating ourselves here: Budsies may just be one of our favorite products to be ever presented on the show. It’s just such a wonderful, imaginative idea to take the creations of children, and then find a way to make those into real, tangible stuffed animals. We used to try to make action figures out of sheets of paper when we were kids, and we would have loved this and asked for a new one every Christmas. It really encourages the thinker and the storyteller of every young mind out there.
Are there substantial challenges here business-wise? Definitely, based on the video below. The hope here is to get seed money, meaning that this is a company still in its infancy. We assume that it would be a huge hit, but there’s no real proof of it. There’s also the fact that it takes a good ten weeks to actually turn a drawing into a stuffed animal, and that may be a little tricky for kids who have a cool drawing and then quickly forget about it. Yet, that is only a minor quibble. We don’t really care about that, and given what you are paying for, $69 plus shipping seems reasonable. We’re really hoping that this works out, and that they’re ready for an onslaught that is coming tonight when the show airs.
Now, let’s turn to a company in Bee Thinking that we’re a little bit higher on now than we were perhaps when we did write that preview. We are concerned about the fact that there is a very limited market for beekeeping products, but the fact that they also sell honey and some merchandise should help with that a little bit. With $700,000 in sales in the past year, the proof-of-concept is there. We just wouldn’t have gone in there asking for more than five times what your sales were for the past year as value.

It is a great idea, but not scale-able. Budsies needs to find another Chinese factory fast, or those wait times will be killers.
