‘The Walking Dead’ season 5, episode 9 spoilers: Andrew Lincoln on Rick honoring Beth
In just over 24 hours from the time of this writing, “The Walking Dead” season 5 is going to return to the air with new episodes, and with Rick and company quite possibly more devastated emotionally than they have been. They were surely terrified aboard that train car, but something is different now. They at least had hope then that there was a chance at something better. Beth was still out there, and they thought that if they made it to Washington, they were going to be able to actually pass along the cure.
Unfortunately, times have very clearly changed. There no longer is a cure thanks to Eugene’s lie, and after spending so much time working to rescue Beth, she is no longer a part of this world. Maybe Rick can try to convince himself that Beth ultimately was her own worst enemy and the reason behind her death, but we have a hard time imagining that she would think like that. Instead, we presume that he would be incredibly hard on himself and his own role in leading us to the consequences that we now have.
So what can Rick do to try to honor Beth now? Rather than be strictly depressed, Andrew Lincoln stresses to TV Guide that it will be essential for him to be able to ensure that Noah makes his way back to his former community, where they may be able to also reside potentially:
“There was very much a paternal relationship between Rick and Beth… and there is something rather moving about the reason for the mission … Rick decides it’s the only way that he can fulfill a dead person’s wishes. I think that that’s a beautiful thing. It’s one of the most moving things Rick has done for a while, to honor her memory in that way.”
To us, one of the more interesting things will be seeing how long you keep the entire group together for now. It would be easier to push the narrative engine further this was, but at the same time, that is a lot of people to have onscreen simultaneously.
