‘American Idol XIV’ video: Priscilla Barker auditions to Miranda Lambert’s ‘More Like Her’
As we first stated yesterday, we’re going to be profiling some “American Idol XIV” auditions leading up to the show’s January 7 premiere on Fox, and today, we’re back for more courtesy of Priscilla Barker.
It still is interesting that Fox seemed to give audition clips of some of their hopefuls to post on YouTube, but we’re not going to complain. After all, it give us a chance to really talk about their odds without at the same time worrying about some of the other stuff like the judges and the show sticking people in a montage.
The quick background on Priscilla is that she’s seemingly a country singer-songwriter type, and while she has a guitar with her, she doesn’t use it in this audition. (Often, hopefuls get to do more than one song.)
Song choice – “More Like Her” by Miranda Lambert. This is the sort of song we’ll always advocate someone do. It’s familiar to country fans, but not to mainstream audiences. It hasn’t been done to death on the show, and gives a singer a chance to hit some good notes.
The performance – Very, very solid. There are times when she strains a little and the hand movements are a little distracting, but those are the only two negatives. She can really sing, and we get some of that storyteller quality from her. In country music, being relatable and open to your audience is almost more important than anything else.
Our verdict – As we said previously, we’re a pretty easy judge in that we’ll give almost anyone more than one chance if they show us at least enough of a reason to be hopeful. Luckily, Priscilla is not even on the cusp; to us, she’s a sure thing to get three “yes” votes and a golden ticket.
