‘Elementary’ season 3, episode 6 review: Sherlock, Kitty, Watson talk things out

ElementaryLast week, we were none too pleased with “Elementary” on CBS. It had a boring case, no Watson, and honestly, we don’t really remember half of it at this point.

Luckily, tonight’s episode was in some ways a step in the right direction, though we are still pining for the days when Sherlock and Watson are really working together all of the time again. At least she had a major role to play this week. Also, Joan is going to work more with Holmes again moving forward!

Away from the case, the primary source of tension revolved around Sherlock being a little too hard on his new partner, and basically even prohibiting her from having a personal life at one point. Eventually he changed his mind, and allowed her to spend time with a man named Zachary, who she cared for. The best part of this episode, at least in terms of a Jonny Lee Miller performance, came when Sherlock tried to lash out at Joan for insinuating that she and Kitty had a great deal in common, and could relate to one another.

As for the case, we’re not even going to pretend that it is that memorable, and in the end this probably remains the biggest flaw of this series. It has never fully established the game of the mystery, or Sherlock’s obsession with solving it, in the way that we’d like. Some of this is just a structural issue, given that they churn through so many cases here so quickly that we really do not have time to focus on anything.

We still like parts of “Elementary,” and while tonight was far from perfect, we consider it a step in the right direction. Grade: B-.
