2015 WGA Awards: ‘Game of Thrones,’ ‘Mad Men,’ ‘The Good Wife’ among nominees

Game of Thrones -

Awards season is quickly approaching, and to us, this means mostly one thing: Getting a chance to size up whether or not the organizations are brilliant, or are becoming increasingly out of touch with what the average viewer is thinking and feeling.

Today, we are doing this courtesy of the official nominees for the annual Writers Guild of America Awards. This ceremony will be held on Saturday, February 14, and the nominees span a variety of different genres and shows. To us, “Mad Men” and “Game of Thrones” are two of the biggest winners in what is a pretty predictable slate of shows.

Drama Series

  • Game of Thrones (HBO)
  • The Good Wife (CBS)
  • House of Cards (Netflix)
  • Mad Men (AMC)
  • True Detective (HBO)

Since this is based on writing, we feel like “True Detective” is probably the favorite.

Comedy Series

  • Louie (FX)
  • Orange Is the New Black (Netflix)
  • Silicon Valley (HBO)
  • Transparent (Amazon)
  • Veep (HBO)

Look for “Transparent” to be a sleeper here, though “Orange Is the New Black” has the following.

New Series

  • The Affair (Showtime)
  • The Knick (Cinemax)
  • Silicon Valley
  • Transparent
  • True Detective

We’d love to see “The Knick” win here, mostly because it is very good and very overlooked.

Long Form Original

  • Deliverance Creek
  • Return to Zero

Long Form Adapted

  • Houdini
  • Klondike
  • The Normal Heart
  • Olive Kitteridge
  • The Leftovers, “Pilot”

Animation

  • “Bob and Deliver,” “Bob’s Burgers,” written by Greg Thompson
  • “Brick Like Me,” “The SImpsons,” written by Brian Kelley
  • “Covercraft,” “The SImpsons,” written by Matt Selman
  • “Pay Pal,” “The SImpsons,” written by David Steinberg
  • “Steal This Episode,” “The Simpsons,” written by J. Stewart Burns
  • “Work Hard or Die Trying, Girl,” “Bob’s Burgers,” written by Nora Smith

Vote for “Steal This Episode” here. Great satire.

Episodic Drama

  • “A Day’s Work,” “Mad Men,” written by Jonathan Igla and Matthew Weiner
  • “Devil You Know,” “Boardwalk Empire,” written by Howard Korder
  • “Donald the Normal,” “Rectify,” written by Kate Powers and Ray McKinnon.
  • “Friendless Child,” “Boardwalk Empire,” written by Riccardo DiLoreto and Cristina Chambers and Howard Korder
  • “The Last Call,” “The Good Wife,” written by Robert and Michelle King
  • “The Lion and the Rose,” “Game of Thrones,” written by George R.R. Martin

Episodic Comedy

  • “The Cold,” “Modern Family,” written by Rick Wiener and Kenny Schwartz
  • “Landline,” “New Girl,” written by Rob Rosell
  • “Low Self Esteem City,” “Orange Is the New Black,” written by Nick Jones
  • “So Did the Fat Lady,” “Louie,” written by Louis CK
  • “Three Dinners,” “Modern Family,” written by Abraham Higginbotham, Steve Levitan, and Jeffrey Richman
  • “The Wilderness,” “Transparent,” written by Ethan Kuperberg

Comedy / Variety / Talk Show

  • The Daily Show with Jon Stewart (Comedy Central)
  • Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO)
  • Inside Amy Schumer (Comedy Central)
  • The Colbert Report (Comedy Central)
  • Jimmy Kimmel Live (ABC)
  • Saturday Night Live (NBC)
  • Real Time with Bill Maher (HBO)

Daytime Drama

  • Days of Our Lives (NBC)
  • General Hospital (ABC)

Yes, these are the only nominees here. Clearly, the WGA knows how limited the category is at this point.
