‘Pretty Little Liars’ season 5: Lucy Hale says end coming with season 7
With the recent renewal for “Pretty Little Liars” for its sixth and seventh season, there has been a common question that has come out of this: Are we nearing the end of the road for the most-popular teen drama in ABC Family history?
Well, it seems like we have an answer to that: Yes. In a new interview on E! (which you can see below), star Lucy Hale lets it slip that the seventh season will be the last for the show. To us, this is not a surprise. The show has already hit its ratings peak, and has really nowhere to go other than down. Also, it’ll be harder to further establish these actors have high school students moving forward, and make the story interesting without dragging things out forever. Plus, after a seventh season it would become a lot more expensive to afford everyone involved.
With all of this being said, don’t mistake Hale’s comments for a network confirmation. While this may be her impression, ABC Family will probably not confirm anything for at least well over another year or so. There is no incentive for them to make such an announcement until they are prepared for it.
From a personal standpoint, though, we appreciate having some sort of knowledge that there is a light at the end of the tunnel, and we have an end date to look forward to. It gives you a sense that the show is really building towards something, and that something is not just getting further and further away due to the show’s success.
Do you think that seven seasons is the right amount of time, too long, or too short to tell the “Pretty Little Liars” story? Season 7 followed by movie(s) would be ideal. It would depend on how season 7 goes I think (spoiler alert). From what producer Marlene King said in interviews, it seems that the high school story part of PLL will end in season 6, including the big reveal of Uber A. Season 7 will time-skipped 5 years (Ezria will not as scandalous as Aria will be 21-22!). You can already see it play out now – with Toby becoming a cop, Ezra getting a new job (toss up among fan whether he will buy the Brew or be a reporter/writer or even be a PI!) Should season 7 prove to be popular, it would surprise me if the network pushed for more seasons, although convincing the casts to stay on might be tricky!
