‘American Horror Story’ with a twist? Fox orders horror-comedy series from Ryan Murphy
Did you really think Ryan Murphy’s TV empire was going to slow down, just because “Glee” is ending and HBO passed on his project “Open”? Well, we’ve got some big news today: Fox has ordered a 15-episode anthology series from the prolific showrunner entitled “Scream Queens,” which will revolve around a different theme every season. What makes this different from “American Horror Story”? While there will be scary moments, it will also contain plenty of comedy.
This project comes from Murphy and his frequent collaborators Brad Falchuk, Ian Brennan, and Dante Di Loreto, and as of right now the theme of the first season will be a college campus that is dealing with a series of murders.
Speaking in a statement, Murphy had the following to say:
“I knew I wanted to work with Brad and Ian again on something comedic, and we are having a blast writing Scream Queens … We hope to create a whole new genre – comedy-horror – and the idea is for every season to revolve around two female leads. We’ve already begun a nationwide search for those women, as well as 10 other supporting roles, and we’re very grateful to Dana and Gary [at Fox] for their enthusiastic support.”
One interesting thing about this show is that it could give some of the “Glee” actors a new home, at least since we know Ryan likes to re-use actors on different projects. With that being said, we worry that after “American Horror Story,” nobody may want to watch more than one scary series at a time, even if this one has some laughs in it.
