‘The Walking Dead’ season 5 spoilers: Seth Gilliam, Father Gabriel, and comic influences

The Walking Dead -When it comes to returning characters on “The Walking Dead,” there’s clearly a lot to look forward to with season 5 coming up. You’ve got Daryl continuing to be badass, Carol returning to team up with Daryl, and Gareth to act like that creepy guy who used to work at your nearby video store.

With all of this said, there’s also new faces to look forward to! Some are probably still shrouded in mystery, but one that we are in particular intrigued to see as Seth Gilliam as Father Gabriel. For one, it’s always fascinating to watch a man of God try to navigate around some of the difficulties of being within this world, where immoral behavior often wins out and zombies are not going to care about you praying. Also, comic-book fans can smile and embrace the thought of this being a story that is based very much from the Robert Kirkman story.

Being the showrunner / secret agent that he has to be, Scott M. Gimple’s of course not going to give away everything when it comes to the character right now. However, he did say the following on the subject in a new Entertainment Weekly interview:

“[The story is very] much from the comic book, not at all from the comic book. I don’t think people can set their watches to it and be like, “Oh yeah, it’s totally going to be the same story.” It’s not. But the fact that he’s Father Gabriel Stokes does mean that there’s gonna absolutely be an association and general relation to the character that was in the books.”

There are going to be plenty of other departures from the comics ahead, just in case you are one of those people who wants the show to completely surprise you. Therefore, Gimple and company are giving you a little bit of everything!

We’re going to have a deeper look at the premiere in the hours ahead, so be sure to be on the lookout for that over at our full coverage page! Also, you can sign up if you want to grab some further TV updates on every show we cover right here. (Photo via AMC.)
