‘The Newsroom’ season 3 spoilers: Pondering over the future of Mackenzie McHale
For our weekly “Newsroom” speculation column today, we’re going to make up for what we personal feel was a gross overshadowing on our part the past few weeks. We’ve discussed the likes of Will, Sloan, Don, and others at length, and therefore have not given Mackenzie McHale any credit.
This is made even more egregious by the fact that without McKenzie, there really would not be a whole lot of a show right now at all. She is the one who brought change to “News Night,” and made the show something relevant in the first place. She’s also pretty darn good at her job most of the time.
We’ve said for quite a while that we want to see her with Will at the end of the series, but saying that a relationship is the only thing we hope for from Mac doesn’t do the character justice. We’re also not even sure staying at “News Night” really does, given the perpetual state of chaos that she has there and how that weighs on her relationship with Will.
At the end of this series, we almost want Mac to find a job working at a bigger network, or running a nightly news program that is a little more structured and doesn’t get bogged down by some of the mess you have to deal with on cable. Maybe Will is there with her, or maybe not. These two don’t need to work together in order to function as a couple.
We’re going to assume that the character is going to stay scatterbrained, but regardless of where she ends up, we just hope that people start to take her as seriously as she deserves. It felt at the times that she was either routinely undermined, or her message wasn’t ringing true enough, even though she often knew what she was talking about.
Mackenzie is probably in our top three favorite “Newsroom” characters, and given the stress and the grief she has been put through on this series, let’s hope for a pleasant end to her journey.
