‘True Blood’ season 7, episode 8 review: Who died, and did Sookie save Bill?
Isn’t it always good to have a shocking “True Blood” death midway through the episode? That set the tone for what was actually a very meaningful episode the rest of the way. We laughed, we got choked up, and in the end we feel like this is one of the most complete hours that the show has put on HBO in a long time.
Let’s start with the death in Violet. We clearly saw this one coming per our deathwatch rankings, but it was still very satisfying to watch. We won’t miss the character at all, mostly because she wasn’t endgame, but she was still very evil. That also creates so many more dynamics for the remaining characters.
Part of this was that it re-opened the Jason / Jessica / Hoyt love triangle, which hasn’t been around for a long time now. We love that Hoyt’s back in this final season, and he brings so much emotional punch to everything without even knowing who Jessica or Jason even are in his memories. He stayed faithful to his girlfriend throughout the episode, but it was admittedly pretty close for a little while there.
Still, nothing compared to the final few minutes. After Eric drank Sarah Newlin’s blood and cured himself of Hep-V, he alongside Pam and Gus (what is it with notorious business owners named Gus on TV?) decided that they would keep the cure a secret, and release something to the public that would only partially work … that way, it would require future sales and make them in the end so much more money. As a result of this, there was a need to get Bill the cure right away … but he didn’t even want it.
Also, we finally said goodbye to Tara in a simple moment that have us looking back at her past with her mother, and a simple message to be allowed to be let go. We were choked up by the end of this; weren’t you?
We really loved this episode, and if “True Blood” continues down this road the rest of the series, we figure we will be very satisfied. Grade: A-.
