‘The Bridge’ season 2, episode 4 review: Multiple deaths; characters come together
For the first three episodes of “The Bridge” season 2, we expressed some serious concern over whether or not the show was branching off in too many directions, and not resolving anything in the process.
Luckily, Wednesday night’s new episode made some moves in order to resolve that, and in turn gave us what we personally believe is the best installment of the season to date … starting with a big death.
We already knew that the man responsible for killing Sonya’s sister was set to pass soon, but the moment was still emotionally raw, whether you are talking about Jake’s facial reaction or Sonya’s cry for him not to touch her. This is a man she should not be trusting, and his actions after their latest night together prove that. We don’t know entirely what this guy means in the larger scheme of things, but it’s no coincidence that he is entered the picture now.
What we actually wish we saw a little more of in this hour was Daniel Frye being tied even more into the sudden death of a “banker,” thanks to a story that was getting set to be run about some illegal operations. It was a chance to see some of our characters all get in the same room together, which has been rare so far. Luckily, this is clearly not over, and it stems far back to some gang operations in Mexico.
Are there still problems here? Definitely, stemming mostly from the fact that we have no idea what Charlotte and Ray are even up to right now, other than maybe having some peripheral ties to everything. Ray’s monologue tonight about his dream future was kind of funny, but that’s about it. Stephen is at least someone we see becoming relevant very quickly.
The struggle right now with “The Bridge” is that it feels like a more haunting show than it did last year, and we appreciate the emotions it tries to leave us with. At the same time, we also wish that the show gave us a more cohesive primary story, and even a little more Eleanor this week to really bring it into A territory. Grade: B+.
