‘Downton Abbey’ season 5: Joanne Froggatt looks back, celebrates big Emmy nod
Going into the Emmy nominations this year, we were honestly not altogether sure just how “Downton Abbey” was going to fare. This was a show that was extremely popular at one point, but the general tendency with awards shows is that after around your third year on the air (unless you are “Breaking Bad,” “Mad Men,” or the occasional other beast), it becomes incredibly hard for you to score a nomination in a major category. Not only that, but there was really only one signature shock in season 4 in the rape of Anna by Mr. Green.
Still, the show managed to pull off quite the feat in scoring multiple nominations for the 2014 ceremony, and Joanne Froggatt, who had the difficult challenge of being a part of that story, was one of them. In celebrating her second nomination, she spoke with E! News, and explained some why she feels that she got a nod this time:
“Well, obviously I had a very dramatic storyline in season four, so I had very dramatic scenes to play. I think Anna in season three, her storylines, they weren’t as at the forefront of the show as they had been in the series two and again in season four. With a show like Downton, it’s an ensemble and that’s how an ensemble works. Sometimes you’re supporting and sometimes you’re leading a storyline and we all take it in turn as a team. I’m just over the moon to be recognized as a nominee again and to have this experience for a second time is amazing.”
The tough part of this for her is going to be competing with all of the competition in this category, and that includes her co-star Maggie Smith. Still, this may be her best chance to win. While not much is known about Anna’s season 5 story, “Downton Abbey” does not traditionally like to follow despair with more despair. Instead, they tend to spread the wealthy among a great deal of the characters, and we envision someone else struggling before her.
We’ll have to see what happens to Froggatt on this show moving forward, but for now click here to catch a look at the rest of our “Downton Abbey” coverage. You can also sign up now to grab more scoop via our CarterMatt Newsletter.
