2014 BET Awards: See Chris Rock talk Donald Sterling, Kevin Hart, more
If there was a reason to be excited about the BET Awards beyond just the awards themselves, it was the presence of Chris Rock as host. This is a guy who has done the Oscars and could certainly do so again if he really wanted to (he’s turned them down many times already), so for him to open this show is a real gift for BET.
Also, Chris was hilarious throughout this entire opening, even if he did touch on a number of discussion points you probably saw coming a mile away, including Donald Sterling and the NBA, Kevin Hart seemingly being everywhere these days, and also Oprah Winfrey. The crowd ate most of it up. The more innovative jokes that we saw from him were all about “Scandal,” and then of course the Jay-Z / Solange Knowles elevator fight that has managed to officially be mocked by almost every talk show in existence. We don’t quite know how they are still pulling that off.
But what this opening really did for us is ask ourselves how in the world we can get more of Chris on TV these days. Why doesn’t he do more gigs, or appear in more things? The simple answer is that he is a perfectionist, and has earned the right over the years to be extremely choosy on what he wants to do. This includes other TV shows and movies, though he has appeared in some questionable ones there lately.
