‘American Idol’ season 14 will lose hours; ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ move explained
For those of you who already saw some of the other headlines when it comes to the state of some of Fox’s series courtesy of their upfront presentations, we now have even more clarification for you … especially if you are an “American Idol” fan.
Shorter weeks for singing – As we said last night, the singing competition is set to reduce its total numbers on TV next year, and one of the ways that this will happen is by getting rid of the two-night format once the show goes live. The auditions will happen in the same way that they always have, but there will be no Thursday results show anymore. We see the format shifting towards something like “So You Think You Can Dance,” where the voting results are announced at the very end of the show.
Fox head Kevin Reilly stopped short of saying that Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban, and Harry Connick Jr. will return as judges, but this is believed to be the case.
The comedy move – So why move “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” to Sundays along with new comedy “Mulaney”? The simple answer here appears to be a way in which they can ensure viewers actually watch the two shows live. Reilly is cognizant of how hard it is t launch comedies now given that there are so many other options out there to get people to laugh. Sunday already has established hits, and the football audience may help both shows.
For those curious, Reilly added that the network is still committed to animation, and this move should not be seen as an indictment that they will stop going down the animated route in the future.
