TV Quick Hits: ‘Veep,’ ‘Silicon Valley’ renewed; ‘Salem,’ ‘Fargo,’ ‘Orphan Black’ ratings
This edition of TV Quick Hits is almost entirely ratings-based, since you are either talking about particular numbers, or shows that have performed well enough for HBO to renew them for another season.
“Veep” and “Silicon Valley” renewed – Based on the critical acclaim and solid ratings, especially for the latter following “Game of Thrones,” we knew that this was coming. The new seasons of these two shows will air next year, possibly at the same time of year. The only way we could see a chance is if one of the shows is moved around in order to help launch something new following the monster fantasy hit.
“Salem” premiere numbers – For a first-time series on WGN America, the network has to be thrilled with “Salem” launching to 2.3 million viewers over the course of the night and 1.5 million viewers live. These numbers as a whole, in particular the 647,000 in the 18-49 demographic, are more than six times higher than what the network typically draws in this timeslot.
WGN America is still in many ways a specialty network, given that it is only in just over 62% of homes. These ratings could improve depending on audience reaction and word of mouth.
“Fargo” sets record – “Fargo” is an excellent show. You may have had concerns going into it and we understand that, but trust us: This is worth your time. Its premiere numbers also went up from 2.65 million to 4.46 million after the fact. This percentage increase was the highest in live+3 data for a premiere in FX history.
“Orphan Black” numbers – The season 2 premiere of the show doubled its season 1 average in adults 18-49, and while it didn’t make it to a million total viewers, remember that this is also on a network that not everyone has in BBC America, it airs on a Saturday night, and it also doesn’t have “Doctor Who” as a lead-in anymore.
