‘The Newsroom’ season 3: Olivia Munn confirms story will be six episodes
There hasn’t been that much scoop out there about the third season of “The Newsroom,” but one of the primary reasons for that is simple: When you have such a short story to tell for a final season, you cannot really risk much of anything getting out.
When we first heard that the show had been renewed for a third season, there was a part of us that thought immediately that the show wasn’t going to have a large order. Season 2 was only nine episodes long, and given how busy Aaron Sorkin is right now when it comes to his Steve Jobs movie, there isn’t a whole lot else that he can put on his plate.
Olivia Munn further confirmed this by saying that the decision to have a third season, let alone one with a short episode order, was entirely Sorkin’s decision. Take a look at her comments from WonderCon to Collider below:
“… It was up to Sorkin, if we were going to do another one, so we were all waiting. HBO still won’t let us out of our contracts, really, because they say, “Just in case Sorkin wants to do more, we can’t let anybody go.” But Sorkin writes every single episode, and that’s exhausting and that’s very hard, to always do that. So, he made a decision to do six more and tell that story. I’m excited, personally, for two reasons. One, it’s really exciting to be able to end a show on a high note. It’s exciting because we all get to go off and do other stuff. We get to have this experience, but also go off and do other projects. And as a friend of Aaron’s, I’m happy that he’s not being forced to keep writing something when he’s just exhausted, and he’s got other things that he wants to write. It’s so much better that way. I’m happy that we get to do six and end it.”
There are not many other series on TV, save for maybe “Louie,” a good percentage of “Girls,” and “Downton Abbey,” that have the same writer on every episode like this one. “True Detective” managed to have the same director for every episode during season 1, but that was apparently so exhausting that they do not plan on doing that ever again.
