TV quick hits: ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ promotions, ‘Gotham,’ ‘The Bridge’ season 2 casting
A bigger cast in Brooklyn – While Andy Samberg was the lead on “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” he was not the only reason the show succeeded. The laugh-out-loud moments were produced by and large as a result of the overall ensemble, which contains so many funny people from top to bottom. This part of our Quick Hits story is about two that don’t often get much of the attention.
Joel McKinnon Miller and Dirk Blocker, who play the parts of befuddled detectives Scully and Hitchcock on the Fox show, have (per Deadline) each been promoted to series regular for the upcoming second season. This was probably always the plan, given that the characters were almost regulars when you consider the amount of time they spent onscreen during the first season. This news does mean that everyone who you see around the Nine-Nine office is locked in to be with the series for a long time, pending that Fox continues to enjoy it and its ratings.
“The Bridge” and a brotherly bond – The Bichir family is one stuffed full of performers, so it does not really surprise us that one of Demian’s brothers is joining the FX drama for a recurring role in season 2. According to TV Guide, Bruno Bichir is going to recur on the show in the role of wealthy Mexican businessman who interacts with Demian’s Marco Ruiz. The two are not going to be related when it comes to their characters.
“Rake” moves to Saturdays – If you are actually still watching Fox’s low-rated drama, know that the last two episodes are airing on Saturday rather than Friday. The numbers were so bad, the network didn’t even want to leave it in their regular TV graveyard.
“Gotham” casts its Riddler – Want to know who is taking on the Edward Nygma role? Cory Michael Smith (“Olive Kitteridge”) has joined the pilot, and there is an option for him to become a series regular following this. The show has already been picked up to series already, so this promotion seems to be likely.
