‘The Blacklist’ season 1, episode 13 review: Did Liz and Tom move forward and adopt?

The latest -There is little doubting that tonight’s episode of “The Blacklist” was definitely moody, to say the least. We had a mission that involved the world’s most awful adoption agency, missing women, and Raymond Reddington trying to continue to hold his title of the best master manipulator in the land. It was certainly creepy, but it was also the best episode of the show since the Christmas hiatus.

Let’s start with the predictable: The decision by Elizabeth and Tom Keen to not continue with the adoption process for the time being. She claimed that they were not ready, which may have been a move brought on by both the agency story, and also the constant warnings from Red that there was something not quite right with the guy.

Thankfully, this show decided to balance out the predictable and the shocking. Diane, it turned out, was more the mole than any of the other “suspects” that we have seen on the show so far. This was a woman who Red was supposedly going to have a hard time killing … in theory. He instead shot her three times, even though she had some information at her disposal that could have helped him. She knew about what happened to his family, but he didn’t let that be motivation enough to keep her alive. Someone else out there in his mind knows enough to be of use when the time comes.

We can’t really be bothered to spend that much time talking about the specifics of the adoption story for one little reason: They really do not matter that much. At the end of the day, what people are going to be the most interested in is the mystery of who Reddington is, and what he wants from working with the FBI. We feel like this story got us at least somewhat closer to that endgame, while at the same time making it look more and more likely that even if Tom isn’t a bad guy in the same way that Red says, he could still be a bad guy in the form of a cheater. He is spending quite a bit of time with another woman! Grade: B+.
