2014 Grammys: Macklemore & Ryan Lewis perform ‘Same Love’; couples marry, Madonna appears
The 2014 Grammy Awards promised a number of big moments going into the show this year, but there may not be one that is talked about more after the fact than what Macklemore & Ryan Lewis did with their performance of “Same Love”: Find a way to make the words of the song have an even greater impact.
While at first this song with Mary Lambert felt like yet another performance of the song that we have seen at various other venues over the years, things started to change up when Queen Latifah, who introduced the performance, came out and married 30 couples of all different sexual orientations. Then, Madonna, also surprised with an appearance, where she sang a few lines of “Open Your Heart” before eventually joining Lambert for her closing lyrics of “Same Love.”
By the time the performance was over, you could see many of the celebrities in attendance wiping tears off of their faces as the couples all exited the building; but while this was very emotional moment in many ways, there was also a great deal of humor and fun present there. For example, one of the couples apparently handed the bouquet to Katy Perry on the way out. There was also thunderous applause, which lasted longer than for any other performance during the show. (Even the majority of people on Twitter, often a place for hate and nasty comments, were crying over it.)
